"That is utterly horrifying."
                                           -Wyatt

One of the things that I love the most about Syfy's original movies is that they all go for the gold.  They don't worry about things like budget when they're writing their scripts, shooting for the stars and then worrying about everything else later.  I would love to be a fly on the wall for some of these pitch meetings:

Syfy: "So you want to have re-animated dinosaur fossils run rampant through the countryside and town and wreck stuff?"

Colin Ferguson: "Well....yes."

Syfy:  "Perfect!  You're budget is $10,000.  You will not have access to a special effects crew, so here's an IBM Compatible x286 with a slightly used voodoo graphics card.  Also, it runs in DOS, so you'll probably need to get a manual off E-Bay to use it.  The film is due in seven days.  Good luck, kid!"

At least that's how I imagine it, anyway.  The film itself is pure Syfy lunacy of the highest caliber.  When the local university is encroaching on the land belonging to local Native Americans, a peaceful protest is put into effect.  Unfortunately the protest is doing no good as papers have already been signed and the university now has legal rights to the land.

Sheriff Jake Roundtree is called to the scene and ends up quasi arresting his uncle, Dakota.  Dakota is leading the charge, so to speak, against the university and please with Roundtree to help him stop them "the old way", whatever that means.  It's at this point that Dakota drops the helpful bit of exposition that Jake's grandfather was a powerful medicine man and that someday he will have to acknowledge his heritage.

Long story short, Dakota (after trashing his kitschy roadside museum and giftshop) performs a ritual that has the unfortunate end result of reanimated dinosaur fossils.  A T-Rex, a Raptor and a Pteranodon all come back to life and immediately start to wreck havoc.   The first place that gets trashed belongs to comic relief, Wyatt.  His trailer that contains the world's largest collection of light bulbs (!?) gets completely destroyed and he runs off into the woods, narrowly escaping becoming a dino-fossil chew toy.

Roundtree is seperated from his archaeologist (who actually, should be a paleontologist....but why split hairs?) wife, who just happens to now be dating the President of the University (how's THAT for convenient).  Their daughter Savannah (played by Emilia Clarke, whom most of you probably know better as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones) is a bit of a rebel...running off with boys to frat parties and such.

It's a pretty straight forward creature feature flick.  Dino-Fossils come to life, rampage and it's up to a Roundtree and Co. to save the day.  Interestingly, the Dino-Fossils are a bit more difficult to contend with than you might think.  They cannot be destroyed by natural means.  After the Raptor is hit by Roundtree full force with his Jeep, the bones scatter everywhere.....and then magically put themselves back together.  This leads to a cool twist in the third act when (MILD SPOILER) the T-Rex and the Pteranodon are both hit by rockets and their bones scatter and mix together.  They then reform into a single T-Rexodon™ flying fossil and become even more dangerous.

Gore:
There's a little blood here and there, but nothing really to write home about.

T&A

Ha ha ha!  Yeah..........no.  This is a Syfy flick.

Creatures Featured:
For your money, you get a T-Rex, Raptor and Pteranodon fossils re-animated and come back to life to scare the bejesus out of unsuspecting folks.  Also, as mentioned before, the T-Rex and Pteranodon end up merging together into a T-Rexodon™ monster fossil.

Final Thoughts:
I had quite a bit of fun with this one.  It's completely and utterly absurd....but I can't shake the feeling that had this movie been made in 1987, given a metal soundtrack with the dino-fossils animated with stop motion animation....this one have been a cult classic.  I could see this having a ridiculous giant clamshell box with insane artwork of a T-Rex fossil the size climbing up a skyscraper holding a scantily clad, well endowed blonde in it's clutches while the Pteranodon carried a semi-truck through the air.  People are running and screaming on the streets below.

Tasmanian Devils - Winnie Cooper vs. Carnivorous Marsupials

Tasmanian Devils
2013
Director - Zach Lipovsky
Writer - Brook Durham
Starring - Danica McKellar, Kennith Mitchell, Apolo Ohno

Tag Line:   The Hunt Has Begun

Alternative Titles:  None

Hoo-boy.  As you know, I have a weak spot for bad movies and Syfy is always pretty gracious with their Saturday night flicks.  Enter Tasmanian Devils, a creature feature starring Danica McKellar.  Yep, that's right, Winnie Fucking Cooper!  That was enough to sell me on it.  Was it worth it?  Well....yes and no.

Nailed it!!!!!

Tasmanian Devils is about a group of base jumpers who head to Devil's Peak in Tasmania....which is located in the middle of government protected wilderness.  These geniuses bring along $50k with them to bribe the officials who will most certainly be coming along to arrest them.  Ah yes....good ol' fashioned American egotism.  Anyway, they land their chopper on top of the peak (which is really less of a peak and more of a plateau....but hey....let's not split hairs here...), gear up and head to the cliff face.

The Wonder Years: 20 Years Later - Winnie Got a Gun

Stone is a noob and this is his first jump.....naturally you wouldn't make your first jump something easy and legal.  Nope, you wanna make it a 3,000 foot high chunk of rock in the middle of hostile wilderness in a foreign country.  So, Stone is having second thoughts and after some razzing from his friends takes the plunge.  Then the dumbass waits too long to pull his 'chute.  Crashing through the trees, he manages to fall through a hole in the rocks below....a hole that's about three feet wide.  After falling through said, hole, he then manages to land smack dab on a stalagmite, which naturally impales him.  This doesn't kill him though.  Even more amazing is the fact that he is impaled with a giant stalagmite obviously severing his spine and his legs are still moving!  Anyway, turns out he fell into a cave that the Aborigines used as a sort of sacred sacrificial offering place.  His blood has awakened some ancient monster Tasmanian Devils with glowing mouths.

The jumpers get arrested by Alex (McKellar) and her fellow rangers, but things get out of control fast when her two colleagues mauled by the Devils.  Alex releases the group and they must now stick together a find a way to survive the onslaught of Tasmanian Devil attacks. So as you can see, there's not much in the way of new material here, in terms of story.  However there is some fun gore to be had in this one.

"I'm just gonna stick around here guys......guys?"
We get the aforementioned impalement by stalagmite (which he then gets ripped off of the stalagmite by a Devil), we get a dude who's cheek has been run through by a sharp branch of a tree, effectively pinning him to the tree by his face.  A woman gets ripped in two, a guy gets half of his face swiped off and more!  So there's some good grue here for you gorehounds.

It's just like ET!  Only with no bike, no aliens....and a Tasmanian Devil...
There are plenty of absolutely insane moments that make absolutely no sense as well.  Such as when one of the jumpers (who is an NYC cop....yet is dumb enough to partake in this whole illegal jump) builds a makeshift flamethrower, MacGuyver style.  When he's asked how he knew how to make it, he responds that he once arrested a kid who made one from specs on the internet.  So....yeah.  However this does lead to a rather cool moment with Alex wielding the flamethrower and toasting one of the Devils.  It was very Ripleyesque.

Midnight Cinephile Totals

Body Count:  Seven.  Not really high, but as I mentioned above the deaths are gory and fun.  I think my favorite is the face swipe.

Boob Count:  Keep dreaming.  This is a Syfy original.  Though McKellar is wearing a rather nice white tank top.

Beast Count:  There are six of the titular creatures in all.  Sadly they are all computer animated and it looks like they came out of a Playstation 2 game.  At least one corporeal creature would have been nice, rather than completely digital, but hey.....it's Syfy.

Final Thoughts:

I was tempted to turn this one off after about half an hour, but I kept with it and ultimately I'm glad I did.  It's completely inept and ridiculous, but not without it's charms....most of all the beautiful Danica McKellar.  I hadn't seen in her in much as of late, save for an appearance on The Big Bang Theory and an interview on Attack of the Show, in which she was promoting the books she had written to help kids learn.  Only researching her a bit more for this review did I find out that she posed for Maxim Magazine and Stuff Magazine a few years ago.  Holy hell, I've fallen in love with Winnie Cooper all over again.

Midnight Cinephile's Halloween Movie Primer - Syfy Channel's 31 Days of Halloween

If you have been following Midnight Cinephile for a while, you may know that I have a deep nostalgic love for the Sci-Fi Channel of yesteryear, especially The Super Nova Movie Explosion!  Now I've ripped on Syfy a few times for the name change and I stand by that.  I still thing Syfy is dopey looking.  However, every year they do put on their 31 Days of Halloween and it makes me forgive the goofy name change a little.

It's far from perfect.  They still waste a ton of time with all day marathons of current Syfy shows.  I would love to see them run marathons of older shows that aren't in regular rotation.  Or at least shows that aren't on pretty much every time you turn on the TV.  I love the Fourth of July Twilight Zone Marathon.....they only show TZ on off hours and it's a kind fun tradition.  I'm getting off track though.  As I was saying, I would love to see them run marathons of shows that the used to show, like V, The Prisoner, Manimal, Dark Shadows and Automan.  Hell, they could fit the entire Automan series into a one day marathon, since it only lasted 13 episodes (which is a crime unto itself).  I love Face Off and Warehouse 13, but I've already seen most episodes multiple times.  Let's bring back some good old fashioned Sci-Fi fare!

Okay, so wasted Marathon Days aside Syfy does a pretty good job of rounding up some decent Halloweentime films.  Even on the Marathon Days though, they usually manage to squeak through a movie in the wee hours of the morning.  Much like AMC, there is still a lot of missed opportunity for diversity here and there are an overabundance of repeated movies, but there is still some spooky goodness to be had.  Movies run the gamut of the usual Syfy original movies to heavily rotated flicks such as Thirteen Ghosts and 100 Feet to a few more surprising selections such as A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2:  Freddy's Revenge and the original Amityville Horror.  You can see the entire schedule HERE.

Syfy's 31 Days of Halloween kicks off with a day full of Alphas and Warehouse 13 episodes.  Thursday the 4th brings a Strek Trek movie marathon day.  Not exactly Halloween, but I do enjoy most of the Star Trek flicks so it's okay in my book.....sadly no Wrath of Kahn though.  Saturday, the 27th, we get a zombie movie marathon, which is awesome and of course on the 31st, we have the obligatory Ghost Hunters marathon, which to be honest has worn out it's novelty with me.  I assume they will have the live investigation as usual because from 7pm (EST) to 10pm (EST) the three hour block simply reads as TBD (To Be Decided).  However, at 10pm, we get the live Face Off finale, which will be open to viewer voting.  That is pretty cool and I will most likely be watching that.  You can see the entire schedule HERE.

In addition to the 31 Days programming, Syfy also has a series of live events planned for the NYC area.  They've even released a handy PDF booklet to help you sort out what events you would like to attend throughout the five Burroughs.  Everything from Haunted Houses and Haunted Walks to Pumpkin Festivals and the Pooch Parade Howl-o-ween.

So there you have it!  Between AMC, TCM and Syfy you should have your hands more than full with Halloween films and shows to keep you occupied this Samhain season!

Sci Fi Channel's Super Nova Movie Explosion

Awesome!
NOT Awesome!
I've mentioned I'm sure a time or two before that I truly miss old school TV.  When every channel had a very unique flavor and you just KNEW what channel you were watching.....channels may have had their logo in the corner of the screen, but it didn't take up a friggin quarter of it.  There weren't any of those annoying ads for other shows running during the show you were watching (which now seem to take up half the damn screen!  Oh how I loath those damn ads.....) and The Sci-Fi Channel hadn't lost it's dignity.  Syfy.  Really?  You know what....I'm just going to let that go for now because you don't really need a 50,000 word essay on why that is so ridiculous.  I'll tackle that when I'm in a grumpy mood and need something to beat on.

Anyway,  as I was talking about my special Easter memory of receiving NOES 3: Dream Warriors as an Easter gift one year,  I was reminded of another happy Easter season.  Not surprisingly, it revolves around horror and sci-fi movies!  Who would've figured, eh?  Here's what happened:

The Sci-Fi Channel ran an incredible special event that it called The Sci Fi Channel Supernova Movie Explosion!  It was amazing.  Oddly enough, I can't find any information on it through internet searches that explicitly state when the Supernova occurred, but looking through past Sci-Fi Channel scheduling grids I believe that it took place in April of 1995.  Running from April 8th through April 16th (the 16th being Easter Sunday) Sci-Fi showed a ton of great movies that, quite frankly, I'm not sure they've shown again since.  I had hoped that the Movie Explosion was going to continue on to be a yearly tradition but sadly there was no such luck.  There was once an attempt at resurrection, which was only a two day affair, and as I recall it was a poor attempt....with crap ass low budget made for cable fare taking the forefront.  I can see that stuff any day.  Ah well.

Now as I recall, each day of the '95 Supernova had a different theme and there were a few folks from the genre that were hosting the event.  The only one I can remember is Roddy McDowall for sure.  Somewhere locked away in my parents house are videotapes with some movies and segments from this, but to be honest I have not had the time to dig and search for them.  Soon, I hope!

Here I have reconstructed the movies shown during that week of Sci-Fi greatness.  There were names for each day, but again, I don't really remember them...so I'll just give a general description of the day's theme!

Movies would start up usually around 9am (except on Saturday's which would
have the movies start at 11am). Before the movies, you could count on
Sci-Fi's Animation Station to show cartoons like The New Adventures of
Gigantor, Defenders of the Earth and the Bionic Six!

The last film of the day would usually start somewhere around 2am...which
would then be followed by either infomercials or episodes of One Step Beyond,
Science Fiction Theater or the odd Twilight Zone episode.

In between films, they would have little filler spots here and there with clips
from shows like Inside Space, Sci-Fi Buzz or the FTL Newsfeed (FTL stood for
Faster Than Light). I miss those shows....and perhaps I will write up a piece
them another time. I seem to remember random little short films and fillers
popping up here or there during the marathon, but the scheduling grids don't
confirm that, so I may be meshing different memories together.

There was a fantastic trailer for the Super Nova Movie Explosion that they aired
only a few times....it ran something like 5 minutes, but it was so cool! As I
look back at this list of films, I notice that there are a few that I don't
think I've ever seen before, such as Retik, The Moon Menace and D-Day on Mars.
They're both serials from the 40's, Retik being a retitling of Radar Men
from The Moon and D-Day is the TV version of The Purple Monster Strikes.

I hope that you guys enjoyed this little stroll through memory lane and I hope
that you, like me, remember the Movie Explosion as a magical time when The Sci-Fi
Channel was still showing the stuff that fans wanted. If I had a time machine,
you bet your sweet batootie that I would be sitting on my parents living room couch
for a week, 17 years ago today watching Gamera & Godzilla beat baddies to a pulp!
