MIja Lou - Beauty In The Darkness

In creating Midnight Cinephile, I have opened up a gateway that has allowed me to meet some absolutely fantastic and interesting people....everything from film makers to artists to other horror fans.  It wasn't until I opened up a twitter account that I met a model named Mija Lou.  One day, I got a message telling me I had a new follower.  Being the nice guy I am, I always like to take the time and thank the people that actually show interest in what I do.  I sent Mija a tweet simply saying "Thank you for following."  Flash forward a few months and we talk on a fairly regular basis.

Over the course of these past few months, as I've gotten to know Mija, I've discovered she is a truly passionate and driven soul who marches to her own drum.  An aspiring alternative pin-up model with a passion for our beloved horror genre, music and tattoos.  A visit to her Facebook Page (http://www.facebook.com/MijaLouPage) and I was a fan.  Not only is Mija absolutely stunning, but there is a genuine honesty to her that you can't help but admire and respect.

Mija has graciously allowed me to share some of her photos from a horror themed photoshoot that she did with photographer Jasmina Kovacevic:

Now, I'm sure you must be just as curious about this beguiling beauty as I was when I first saw her.  So I will allow Mija to tell you about herself in her own words:

My name is Mia.
My model name is Mija Lou.
I have been modeling since the start of this year (2012). I do alternative and pinup modeling. I am still an aspiring model, but already, I achieved a lot more than I was expecting which is pretty awesome!
I am soon to be internationally published and you may know me from the talented Piers Hazell's zombified Mija Lou drawings.  [You can see Piers' Zombie Mija drawings on her Facebook Page!]

I was born on a cold February afternoon in 1991.  My mother says that I was a special child. I could walk very early, and lost my first teeth when I was 4 years old (The natural way) and at some point I was deaf for a time.
But I was very charming and French men loved me. Haha!

I'm from the little town of Billund, Denmark, which is called The Children's Capital. It's where LEGO was invented! So YES, I have worked in LEGOLAND and at the airport. Haha. But it's a good town to grew up in and I still live there.

Growing up in a family that's very interested in music and likes to party, I have learned  a lot about music and how to be a free spirit.
Yes my family parties hard! From my grandparents to my parents, so we have a special bond.
Other than that, I have three siblings. An older sister, an older brother and a little brother, so I'm a middle child.

In school I was the awkward one. I had my very close friend all of these years luckily, and we went through school with a special bond. I always felt very different from the others, and didn't seem to fit in.  That taught  me to be strong and embrace my look and personality.

Here's a cute story: One day my classmates teased me when we were little. They said I looked like a rabbit (I had big fronth teeth) so I just said to them "I don't look like a rabbit! I look like my guinea pig Pjuske! (In English "Fluffy")" And they never teased me again! Hahaha!

I now go to business school here in Denmark. I play football/soccer and have played for 11 years now. I'm a striker on the field. I started out playing with boys so I'm not affraid of getting down and dirty!
I have played theater when I was younger as well. Always been told I was good at it, but I don't do it anymore.
I like to paint when I have time and inspiration. I'm the artistic type.

Random facts about me:  I actually wanted to be a rabbit when I grew up when I was little! One of my pet peeves is people sneezing or coughing. I have won 1 gold and 1 silver medal at the Grand Prix Rhythm Gymnastics.
 I'm a country girl.
 My favorite music are oldies.
I have anxiety. I like to sing and dance.
I'm a Lord Of The Rings freak.
 I like to dress up.

You can find Mija listed in The Alternative Model Directory listed under Northern European Models.  She is also going to be appearing in the October and November issues of The Poetic Pinup Revue.  Also check out Wretched Production's Horror Hottie competition and vote for her!

Stay tuned for Part II of our epic Mija Lou coverage.....with all new Halloween themed photos and an in depth interview with her!  Then in honor of Mija and all things Denmark, stay tuned for our review of Reptilicus....Denmark's one and only giant monster film!

Fat Kid Massacre!!!

What can I say that the title doesn't?  Have you ever wanted to watch fat guys get murdered in food related ways?  Well, this just may be the flick that you are looking for!  Fat Kid Massacre is only a short film currently, but the lads at BDHR Entertainment (the production branch of Big Daddy Horror Reviews) are heading up an Indiegogo campaign to see their vision to fruition.

Fat Kid Massacre is about a group of fat bullies who torment their former friend (whom they refer to as The Skinny Bitch) who lost weight and got in shape.  The Fat Kids continue to bully The Skinny Bitch until a mysterious killer starts to stalk The Fat Kids and food related murder ensues.  One such murder is featured in the short, which serves as demo of what the finished film would be like once funds have been acquired.

If you'd like to contribute and help get the full length film made, you can head on over to The Fat Kid Massacre Indiegogo site to pledge between $13 and $1,999.  Perks range from a Thank You in the credits (and IMDB) to an Executive Producer title, which includes a full day set visit and dinner with the production team and Ryan Sandefur (The Skinny Bitch).

Paranormal Activity 4 Trailer

I'm a fan of the Paranormal Activity movies.  I go to see each one in the theater when they come out.  I like the fact that each one is connected with the others.  Being a fan of the found footage style of horror films, I find that the PA movies are very well done and all have a very palpable sense of dread to them.

The tag line reads:

All the activity
has lead to this........

So I don't know if this is going to be the last in the Paranormal Activity films, but it sounds like this is going to be the final story about Katie and her family.  The film is a direct sequel to Paranormal Activity 2.  Part 3 was a prequel, if you remember.  This one takes place several years after the events of PA2.  Katie (still possessed I must assume) has taken up residence with Hunter (remember she abducted him at the end of PA2) now calling him Robbie.  This triggers a new set of paranormal happenings for their neighbor Alice and her mother.

I truly hope that this one brings the story to an epic conclusion.  The movie releases on October 19th, so we'll soon see what this is all leading up to.
  For now, here's the trailer:

Don't Go In The Woods - Band On The Run

What in the hell did I just watch?  On one hand, I want to completely rip this movie to shreds for all of it's ridiculousness.  On the other hand, there is an interesting concept behind this mess of celluloid.  Guess I'll just dive right in and we'll see what happens!

Okay, so....at the beginning of every week, I sit down with my DVR and I search out movies to watch in the coming week.  This past week was pretty slow for genre fare, but I came across this title and the synopsis read:  A band goes into the woods to write songs and is stalked by a well dressed killer.  Sounds like an 80's throwback movie, right?  I'm envisioning something like Rock & Roll Nightmare meets American Psycho.  Yeah, Patrick Bateman chopping up musicians in the woods!  I can get behind that!

So, at this point I'm excited to see this bad monkey.  Then I hit the play button.  It was all downhill from there.  The movie opens with some bizarre country/gospel music behind "played" by a bunch of Emo lookin' dudes driving down the road in a van.  I put play in quotation marks because on the soundtrack you hear a clearly pre-recorded and pretty complete music track.  In the van, there's a guy with an acoustic guitar, a guy banging his drumsticks on the seat and another one has melodica!    Clearly the instruments present can't produce the music we're hearing.

Emo Groupies.   Oh Yay.

This brings us to my first major problem with this flick.  All of the music is PAINFULLY pre-recorded.  So much to the point that it's extremely distracting.  Now, I understand that this is a movie and there is a need to pre-record the music to get the sound right....but being that these guys are supposed to be sitting around the woods with their acoustic guitars (and a snare drum) it gets a bit ridiculous when all of a sudden one of the guys has a base guitar with a tiny amp.  Tiny.  Like the size of a GameCube.  Remember GameCube?  Nintendo's little box of fun?  I loved the GameCube. Anyway, where was I?  Right, the bass guitar with the tiny amp....and then all of a sudden a keyboard that is clearly not plugged into anything is sitting on a stump.  What the hell?   The thing sounds like it's running through a PA system!  Arggh!

The fellas are apparently going out to the woods because they want to be more than just the entertainment at the local bars.  Nick (Matt Sbeglia) comes across as the leader of the band.  He wants the band to spend a distraction free weekend in the woods writing new music so they can release an album.  Now, I say that he appears to be the Frontman because he seems to call all the shots and the other's do as he says.  Nick says no drugs and when Johnny (Soomin Lee) breaks out the pot in the van, Nick tosses it out the window.  Nick said "No phones" so when he discovers that everyone brought their phones he makes them turn them in to him.  Then he smashes them with an axe.  WHAT THE HELL?????  Dude, I'll tell you what.....some asshole breaks me phone with an axe, we gonna have some words!

It's Jack the Renaissance Sledgehammer Killer!  RUUUUN!

To be perfectly honest with you, I don't remember who was who when it came to the band members...there was a Carlos, Robbie.....and some other dude....but I don't know which was which.  I tried to look it up on Imdb, but apparently this was the first film for all of these guys.  So there's not even a photo available of them.  Ah well, I tried.  That's the important thing.  I cared enough to at least give it a shot.  Aw, fuck it, who am I kidding?  They all look the same....bunch of Emo wierdos.  Except for the dude who's blind.  Yeah.  The base player guy is blind.  Why the hell would you bring a blind guy out into the woods to write music?  I could be wrong but that sounds WAY counter-productive!

Oh hell, I went of on another tangent, didn't I?  The point I was trying to make a couple of paragraphs back there is that while it appears that Nick is the Frontman of the band and all his bullying and pushing the other guys around and shouting "We need to write new music!" and generally being a friggin prick, the other guys do the majority of the singing and playing.  Not to mention that the other guys have better voices than he does.  He sounds like a frog being drowned in an acid bath.  It is literally painful to listen to this guy "sing".

Oh Dear God, please make it stop!

Now having said that, the songs are actually not that bad.  They're fairly melodic and not too rough on the ears.  Even though it was poorly dubbed and lip synced, I found the music to be the best part of the film.....even though it is what ultimately causes to movie to fail.

The entire first hour of the film is these guys singing their songs around the campfire (or Nick occasionally huffing off with his guitar and sitting by himself playing the same damn song over and over and sounding like he's gargling kitty litter mixed with hot sauce) with a quick double murder interspersed.  The killer is a dude that looks like a Cosplay mash-up of Jack the Ripper and a generic renaissance fair reject carrying around a sledgehammer.  You know, that sounds far cooler than it really is.....and it doesn't even sound remotely cool.

Now according to my DVR, Don't Go In The Woods runs 86 minutes.  66 minutes in and there have only been the two murders way back toward the beginning.  Then all of a sudden everyone gets slaughtered in the middle of the day. They're not creative in any way shape or form.....they're just rapid fire sledgehammer murders.

I'm going to spoil the ending of the movie here.....for two reasons:

1.)  I don't want you to have to suffer through this turd.
2.)  The ending of the movie is so ridiculous and convoluted I might have it wrong and this isn't a spoiler.  It could be just the way I interpreted events.

Tell me this dude doesn't look like Frodo on crack.  Seriously!
So you've been warned.  Avast ye mateys.....spoilers lie ahead.  Okay.  So, we got the rapid fire sledgehammer murders going on.  The final girl is of course Nick's girlfriend....or ex-girlfriend....whatever.  Anyway....they're running away from Jack the Renaissance Sledghammer Killer (known for the rest of this explaination as JRSK) and suddenly Nick stops.  He still has his guitar.  He yells at his girlfriend to turn on his digital recorder and starts to strum away with an intense Emo look on his face.  She's like all "What's wrong with you?" then screams "Oh My God!" about 12 times before running off without him.  Well, wouldn't you know it?  JRSK catches up with her and starts to mess her up.  Then she starts to sing the song that Nick started to play when he told her to turn on the recorder....even though JRSK was after them.  Then JRSK starts to listen to the recorder.  Then Nick is standing there with blood on him.  Then he hits JRSK with the sledgehammer.  Then he jumps in the river and swims to his girlfriend.  Then he gets out of the water and walks over her, holding the digital recorder and listening to his frog mating call song thing that he made.  CUT TO:  A record producer's office.  The producer is telling Nick that his album is gonna be big.  We see an album cover (ANAL BUM COVER!   SEAN CONNERY FTW!  SUCK IT TREBEK!)  and it's titled Don't Go in The Woods.  Oh.  So clever.  Then the producer tells Nick that getting rid of his band and going solo is the best thing he ever did.  Fin.

So.....what I took from this is that Nick was actually the JRSK guy...but he wasn't dressing up....it was the personification of his psychotic tendencies.  Or some such psycho-bable bullshit.  I don't know.

Remember way back in the beginning when I said that there was an interesting concept her?  Well, watching this mess, it kept trying to switch between the Emo band playing songs around the fire and then it would switch to people out in the woods singing like they were in a musical.....full musical arrangement and dancing included.  Had they gone at this as a straight out horror musical, then maybe it would have worked....but the movie couldn't decide what it wanted to be.  Combine that with the a pretty empty script (that makes NO sense to begin with) and you get 86 minutes of some not bad music tacked onto an incredibly weak slasher flick.  This is truly a Midnite film....because no matter what time you watch it, you're gonna feel like it's the middle of the night!

Fright Show (1985) - Pure VHS Ecstasy

This is a very special review.  This is a review at least 20 years in the making.  This is Fright Show aka Cinemagic.  The short anthology film that forever ignited my lust for VHS horror.  I'm getting all warm and tingly just thinking about the film.  Are you ready for a turbo-shot of awesome to the brain?  Strap in, kiddies!

As I've mentioned NUMEROUS times before, there was a small Mom & Pop video store my hometown (Fitchburg, MA....if anyone cares) called Video Paradise.  It was on a small strip of stores on Main St, directly across from the train station.  Other businesses came and went.....convenience stores, a small puppet theater and even a small adult theater!  Adult as in, not a puppet theater.  It wasn't a porno theater or anything like that.  That would have been weird....yet   really friggin' cool all at the same time!  Anyway....businesses came and went but Video Paradise was always right there....all the way up through my part time job there.  The Blockbuster came to town and ruined our business.  Now that strip doesn't even exist anymore.  It's been completely removed and turned into a little grassy patch.  It really sucks ass.

When I used to roam the aisles of Video Paradise as a kid, I would always make to take a stroll through the horror section.  I never got tired of looking at all the lurid artwork and just trying to imagine what the movies were actually like.  I would gaze at the cover of David Cronenberg's remake of The Fly and stand there, absolutely horrified at the human hand and fly leg emerging from the telepod.  Holy hell!  I had seen The Fly with Vincent Price and it didn't look anything like this!  This was NUTS!  I wanted desperately to know what the rest of the human/insect hybrid looked like.  It would be quite a few years before I finally was able to find out.....and it was just as horrifying as I had imagined!

Now, among the assorted video boxes was a small blue and black slipcase cover with bright red lettering.   FRIGHT SHOW!   A journey into the bizarre world of Horror and Science Fiction lunacy!   There were four pictures on the cover as well, each one representing each of the four short films that made up the movie.  There was a Starlog Logo up top.....I had no idea what Starlog was at first.....only later after discovering Fangoria and Cinemagic magazines did I make the connections.  Cinemagic, by the way, is the alternate title of this movie.

When I was somewhere around 11 or 12 (so somewhere between '90-'91) I managed to strike a deal with my parents that I could watch horror movies (even the R rated ones) provided that they were so rated for gore and language and not due to nudity.  I felt like I had just committed the crime of the century and gotten away with it!  Full license to go nuts and watch whatever horror movies I wanted!  At the time, I thought my mother was incredibly naive.  I knew that blood and boobs went hand in hand, but did my mother?  Sometimes I still wonder if she knew what she had done at the time.  Back in the 80's they didn't list every single reason for a rating right on the box.  It simply stated.....Rated R.  It wasn't until later that you started to get the full rundown of a films content.

Anyway, with this new deal struck I was able to start renting all the horror movies that I had so lustfully leered at for much of my childhood.  Every Saturday was now an adventure into the realms of terror.  Okay....well, actually sometimes it was an adventure into terror....other times it was a lesson in the art of making 80's VHS box art that was way better than the movie itself.  I'm not going to lie and say that Fright Show was the FIRST horror movie I rented....that was actually The Fly (Oh......the anticipation of popping that bad monkey into the VCR.....that is a story for another time!).   Fright Show was among the first however.

I remember that I actually rented it on a weeknight.  During summer vacation, sometimes Mom would take us down to Video Paradise and let us each rent a movie.  I have no idea why, but I'm just about certain it was a Tuesday night.  When we got home, my sister popped in something like but not necessarily Pretty Woman in the VCR in the family room.  I headed straight to my bedroom to watch Fright Show!  Yep.  I had a VCR in my bedroom.  Had a Nintendo in there too. You know you're jealous.

Well, about 20 years later and I've finally managed to get my very own copy on VHS!  YES!  So without further adieu.....

Over 800 words in and finally getting to the review.....but you know what?  I think the preamble was worth it and if you're still with me.....well, then you rock!   HERE WE GO!

I thought long and hard about whether or not to include video clips of the films themselves.  Ultimately I decided not to.  When dealing with a movie this mythic....this legendary.....this rare.....just showing a little video clip is a great injustice to the film itself.  I have, however come to a compromise.  I have taken screenshots of each of the films.....and I will run the Host Segments that run before/between each film.  That way you get a taste for what it's like without ruining the experience!  I know....I'm a pretty rad guy.

This little ditty is a mindfuck and a half!  A young girl named Jenny visits the museum on a school trip and is terrified by the museums taxidermist, Dr. Dobermind.  To be honest, if I was in a dark room with this dude, I'd be pretty wigged out too.  He's a freak and a half.  Well, after the trip Jenny starts to see Dr. Dobermind EVERYWHERE!  Walking down the street, in cars and even working at the local ice cream shop ("We have Vanilla......")  When she gets home, things get even weirder when she starts to hallucinate that there is a severed hand in her drawer (which is lined with old Hulk comics....BLASPHEMY!) see Dobermind's severed head in her closet and then has a total freak out while looking in the mirror and seeing her face decay and rip off to a rotting skull!  The ending to the film is pretty classic and creepy and it allows you to draw your own conclusions, which I like.  I always imagine the worst.  It's a hobby.

HOLY HELL!  It's Dr. Dobermind!  Creepy bastard.....

I looked exactly like this when I first saw Dr. D!

"We have only Vanilla....."

Ack!  Get that blood off of the vintage Hulk comics!

You are definitely gonna need some ProActive for that!

This is the perfect segment to start of this anthology.  It's simple, yet it really gets in your head and you find yourself thinking about it at random points in your day.  It has a certain charm to it as well.  It kinda feels like an 80's episode of The Twilight Zone....or maybe even Night Gallery.  Either way it does a great job of setting the mood for the duration of the running time (which by the way is a scant 59 minutes!)

This short is pure parody of the Ridley Scott classic Alien (in case you couldn't work that out for yourself!).  A crew of 7 is aboard a ship called the NOSEstromo with a cargo of 800,000 pounds of cocaine bound for San Francisco.  PARTAAAY SHIP!  They waste absolutely NO time letting you know exactly how tongue in cheek this is going to be.  The front of the ship is a GIANT NOSE!  Yep.  It's THAT kinda movie.  Once inside the ship, we see the crew waking up from cryostasis....which means that they are literally crawling out of refrigerators packed with ice and frozen foods.  Once our intrepid crew members are awake and sprinkling cocaine on their oatmeal they receive a distress signal from a planet.  The computer (called MOM)  advises to investigate.  Que shuttle in the shape of a spoon coming out of the ship's nostril.

Bwaa-haaa!  The NOSEstromo!  Get it....NOSE.....

Holy Hell!

Heh heh heh......Stoufers in Spaaaace

The short follows the original film as far as hitting the major plot points, but using insanely silly gags the whole way through, such as the (obviously robotic) Hash, who wears a half mask and googily eye glassses to fool the crew into thinking he's human.  When the chest burst scene comes up, instead of a xenomorph, a little plastic clown pops out of the dude's chest.  By the dude, I mean the astronaut that got a pie to the face from a cardboard egg.....not The Dude.  The Big Lebowski has nothing to do with this film.....though I'm sure The Dude would probably enjoy this flick after a white russian or two.  Okay....so.  Little clown pops out of chest and then immediately morphs into a fucked up low rent 80's version of Captain Spaulding!  HOLY SHIT!

Wait....what?  He's a ROBOT????

So this little clown jack-in-the-box thingie turns into.....

Oh SHIT!  It's Captain Spaulding's homeless cousin!

Despite the blatant goofiness of the whole thing, Illegal Alien actually has some moments of extreme creepiness that left me a bit unnerved.  There's a great scene where the clown/alien/Captian Spaulding is camouflaging himself in with some pipes with a weird arm prop that has a creepy head on the end of it with glowing eyes.   That had me hit the rewind button more than once.  Another scene has the clown/alien/Captain Spaulding disguising himself as a lamp.  Funny yet wicked fucking creepy.  As a matter of fact, I will go on record as saying that Illegal Alien is second only to Killer Klowns From Outer Space when it comes to creepy space clowns.

This one was cool....but as in all anthologies, there are some segments that you like and some that are just.....okay.  This is the one that is just "okay" to me.  The story involves a young boy who's part of a horror club (which menas that a bunch of kids sit up in a tree house and tell scary stories).  Well, wouldn't ya know it, Jr. gets called home and ruins the fun for everyone.  The kid is also terrified of monsters and these stories.  I could draw some parallels between this segment and The Monster Squad.  I mean we've got The Horror Club vs The Monster Club (changed mid-film to Monster Squad).  We've got a kid who is afraid of monsters (the protagonist in this film and Eugene in MS).  It might be stretching a bit, but it's just something that I noticed.

I wish the movie in the movie was a real movie.....just sayin'

Can't sleep....monster'll eat me......

The Monster Squa-  er....Horror Club!

Well, once bedtime rolls around, Jr. (his name isn't Jr.....I just can't remember for the life of me what his name is and to be honest I'm too lazy to look it up!) anyway....Jr's lying in bed and every little sound creeps him out.  Well, naturally he discovers that there is indeed a monster in his room. He tries to tell his Dad, but he gets scolded and told that he's not allowed to go to his horror club anymore.  So, Jr goes and gets his bigger bro Barry, who arms himself with a slingshot and some marbles and investigates.  I don't mind spoiling the fact that Barry gets eaten.  You knew he was gonna get it.  He's the smart ass big brother.

"Mom!  Dad!  The Monster ate Barry!"

The Monster!

The body count rises as Jr. looks on in horror.  The end is a bit contrived and predictable, but it's still a decent flick.  The last last shot is a nice touch as well.  If you liked movies like Darkness Falls and The Boogeyman, then you'll dig this mid-80's version of that type of story.

This is my absolute favorite segment and worth the price of the tape all together.  I absolutely love everything about this one.  The cornball and downright cheesy dialog, the cheap but creative special effects....they all come together to create something incredibly special.  It has a certain feel.....a certain charm.....a certain.......je ne sais qoi.

It's dusk at 10:18pm on Sept 26?  This IS Sci-fi!

Our lovable beer swilling heros

This segment starts with some friends sitting around, playing poker and arguing.  A meteor crashes through the house and lands in the basement, unleashing an alien into their home.  Now this isn't some lower alien life form.  This isn't just some wild alien animal that is killing just because it doesn't know what else to do (or because we're tasty).  This is a tall green bald dude, with a fucked up face and a kickin' 80's-tastic space suit (that leaves his nipples exposed....I dunno why that cracked me up so much....but it did!).

I'm no expert, but that looks like a meteor!

"Take me to your lea-  OW You stabbed me!"

The four lads try to figure out what to do with the invader and two of them decide that the best way to deal with this is violently.  This is also where one of my favorite lines comes in.  When two of the guys want to call the National Guard, the other want to respond with homegrown violence.  The argument goes something like this:

Guy 1:  What if it's dangerious?
Guy 2:  That's what I've got THIS for (Holds up a puny looking knife)
Guy 1:  What are you going to do?  Stab a meteor?
Guy 2:  (Looking Guy 1 up and down and then looking at his knife)  BUTT OUT!

BWAAA-HUAAAAAA-HAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!   Oh man.....that never gets old!   It may not sound very funny in print, but trust me, it's friggin HILARIOUS!

Anywhoo.....the try to use violence to take care of their space invader problem....which does not turn out well for Mr. I've-Got-THIS!  He throws the knife and stabs the alien in the chest.  The alien returns fire with an energy plasma ball thing that it shoots out of it's hand.  Sweet!

Awww yeah!  Plasma death rays for everyone!

Who keeps a tommygun on their wall?  Loaded at that!

What follows is a battle royal between these incompetent beer chuggers and the intruder from beyond the stars.  I just can't tell you enough how much I love this segment.  I love every little thing from the wood paneling on the walls to the fact that this guy keeps a friggin TOMMY GUN on his wall.....LOADED!  Seriously?  Who does that?  THIS GUY DOES!  The Thing in the Basement is the epitome of 80's sci-fi cheese and I am making it required viewing for anyone who wishes to consider themselves a true Midnight Cinephile!

Alright boys.....take us home!

Father's Day - WTF?

I've been trying to find the right way to review Father's Day.  I've been putting it off because I want to do justice to this film, but at the same time, I don't want to spoil it for anyone.  This movie is definitely best experienced when you don't know what's coming next.  After I completed the packaging review a couple weeks back, I really thought that the next day I would put out a review of the film with no problem.  I say down with my trusty laptop and a Disaronno and Coke and stared at my screen for a good ten minutes.  What the hell?!?

At first I thought it was just writers block.  Happens from time to time.  Sometimes I sit down and the words just flow out like a viscous fluid.....other times I sit down and find that I've got some creative constipation.  This was different though.  I loved the movie.  I loved the packaging.  I loved the soundtrack CD that came as a bonus fourth disc.  So what was the problem?  Why couldn't I just review the damn thing?

I've been waiting to see Father's Day for what seems like forever.....and after several false release dates, (April.....then June....then finally August) I finally got my grubby little mitts on this bad monkey.  There was quite a bit of hype building up to the movie and I was completely caught up in it.  I bought the Astron-6 compilation DVD and watched it about 6 million times.  I still wish that Fireman and Lazer Ghosts 2: Return To Laser Cover were both full length movies....because they were frigging kick ass.....not to mention the surprise film of the set for me:  Cool Guys!  Definitely worth the price of admission alone.

Okay, okay enough about my inability to write a review....and enough about the compilation disc.  Let's get down to brass tacks here.  Father's Day.  An absolutely mind blowingly fantastic Trash-terpiece that is like nothing you have seen before.  If there is something that you find offensive, there's a good chance that you will find it in here.  Lucky for me.....I'm pretty much impossible to offend when it comes to films.

Father's Day looks and feels like an early 80's gore revenge flick.  I don't want to give away too much because I think that experiencing the film without knowing too much is truly the best way to see this film.  So here we go:  A spoiler-free plot synopsis.....

Ahab (Adam Brooks) tracked down and thought he killed psychotic father murderer/rapist Chris Fuchman (Mackenzie Murdock).   Years later the raping/killing starts anew and Ahab joins forces with Father John Sullivan (Matthew Kennedy), a gung-ho priest, Twink (Connor Sweeney) a male prostitute and Chelsea (Amu Groening), Ahab's sister who is now a stripper.  The foursome takes on the evil Fuchman and things go from weird to complete and total batshit crazy real quick.

Scene after scene piles on the blood and boobs as The Father's Day Killer continues his rampage.  The final showdown is quite possibly the most insane final reel I've ever seen!  I wish that I could put it into a coherent sentence and/or paragraph, but the last reel is literally just one big ol' WTF moment!

If you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you get your hands on a copy, invite some friends over and hold onto your butts because it's gonna be a wild ride.  Movies such as this and Hobo With A Shotgun show that when a talented group of filmmakers get together and have a true love for the genre and material they're shooting, it completely blows away anything that the trite Hollywood machine could ever produce.

No GO!  The Fuchmanicus demands it!

V/H/S - Analog Bricks Of Horror

VHS.  Just saying those three letters gives me a warm feeling all over.  VHS, of the Video Home System won out the videotape format wars, beating out Betamax and (to a MUCH lesser degree) the VX.  Back when I was a kid, there were Mom & Pop shops everywhere filled with VHS tapes.  Slipcases, Clamshell, Big Box....they had them all....displayed shelf upon shelf, with their lurid artwork proudly on display.

These days, there are many Videovores and VHS Hunters such as myself, who can't get enough of those magical analog magnetic tapes.  VHS tapes can go for as little as a penny (which is very common with a lot of the later produced tapes from the late 90's and early 00's) to as much as $800.00 (that's about how much was paid for the ultra-rare tape Tales From The QuaDead Zone).  It never ceases to amaze me how "dead formats" can suddenly make a resurgence in popularity.  In fact VHS has become so repopularized (yup, I made up that word) that some filimmakers are actually releasing their new films on VHS!

I'm sure you're not here for a history lesson, though.  So let's get on with it, shall we?  I first heard about V/H/S about a year ago and was immediately excited about it.  See, I'm also a sucker for anthology films AND found footage films.  V/H/S combines both of these together in a very interesting way.  The concept is that some lowlife thugs are hired to break into an old guys house and steal a VHS tape with unknown content on it.  After breaking in, the thugs find the old man in a room upstairs dead in his chair.  There is a group of TV's stacked up in the room connected to a VCR and a mess of VHS tapes on the floor.  Checking the the contents of the tape is what allows us to jump from short film to short film.

I've gotta tell ya, I had a blast with this film.  Sure some of the stories are weaker than others (which is the case with any anthology film) but as a whole, I thought V/H/S was a fun ride from start to finish.  The film features five short films (with the thugs in the house functioning as a sort of sixth story.) each in a "found footage" kind of format.

AMATEUR NIGHT -
Written by David Bruckner & Nicholas Tecosky
Directed by David Bruckner

The first segment starts things off with a bang.  It's on of my favorites, possibly because I really had no idea what to expect with this being the first segment and all.  Plus it introduced me to Hannah Fierman.  Man, I don't know what it is about her, but I found her both extremely creepy yet really hot at the same time.  Maybe I'm just warped, I dunno.  Tell ya what though, made me glad that I'm married and not in the singles scene anymore!

SECOND HONEYMOON -
Written & Directed by Ti West

I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with the final resolution of this particular segment.  There was a great set-up with a couple taking a trip through the Grand Canyon and at one point, they come across an electronic fortune telling machine ala the Zoltar machine in the Tom Hanks movie, Big.  As a matter of fact they even reference that in the scene.  I couldn't help but think that there were some missed opportunities in this segment.  I really enjoy Ti West's films and I was very surprised to find that this one was probably my least favorite entry.

TUESDAY THE 17TH -
Written & Directed by Glenn McQuaid

I really enjoyed this one.  It starts out pretty cliched and after my disappointment with the Second Honeymoon segment I was starting to lose a little interest when this one started.  That quickly started to change however as the story quickly took shape and freaky shit started happening. There are a few things in this one that really had me scratching my head, plotwise.....but the incredible creativity that went into the paranormal "punchline" of the segment allowed me to very quickly forgive the plot holes.

THE SICK THING THAT HAPPENED TO EMILY WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER -
Written by Simon Barrett
Directed by Joe Swanberg

Well, first off, this segment gets the award for coolest title!  This was an interesting segment in that it completely takes place via a Skype-style video chat between a girl and her long distance boyfriend.  The concept of only being able to see what is going on from the vantage point of a laptop's webcam is really cool and makes for some tense moments, but being able to see her boyfriends reactions to what he is seeing on screen (via a screen in screen showing his own webcam's view) I think hurt it a bit.  That and the fact that the "reveal" is extremely confusing makes this one of the lesser entries, in my opinion.  Being who I am, and being a huge paranormal geek, I was able to figure out what was happening.....but I think that many could be very easily lost in what is going on.  A good effort and very creative......but could have used some more script work.

This is another one that really surprised me.  As the segment starts, it seemed to be a very similar set-up to Amateur Night.  Things quickly changed my mind, however.  This segment definitely had the most "creep" factor to it and the more I think about it, the more I want to watch it again.  It's easy to see why they saved this one for last.  The special effects in this segment are so well done that you would swear that these events were really unfolding on a simply VHS tape.  The second half of this segment is worth the entire price of admission alone.  When the paranormal shit hits the fan, it's a balls to the wall to the end.  You don't want to miss this.

Okay, so I've gone through each segment and done my best to not give anything away about them. I think part of the fun of this film is experiencing it for yourself without knowing what's coming at you next.  Sure this movie has some problems and sometimes has you scratching your head (Like why is there a VHS tape that contains Skype video chat footage?????) but I really think that adds to some of the fun.  While it's clear that not everything was shot on VHS, the film evokes that SOV 80's feeling pretty well....especially in the Tuesday the 17th segment.

All in all, I really loved V/H/S.....flaws and all....and more-so I would love to see this turned into a franchise.  I think that the found footage format has much to offer and there are still as of yet under-explored avenues that a really creative filmmaker could take.  Of course you can never have too many anthology films either.

You can watch V/H/S on VOD through your cable provider, rent it from itunes or amazon streaming, or you can catch it's limited theater release on October 8th.  No matter which way you choose to go, make sure you make it a point to see this one!
